If you are eligible to retire, you may make a Preretirement Election of an Option. This election is available to you to ensure a monthly lifetime benefit is distributed to your designated beneficiar(ies) if you should die before retirement.

When you elect an option, your monthly benefit will be reduced from the Member-Only Benefit. At retirement, your benefit will be modified under the elected option. If you die before your retirement date with a Preretirement Election of an Option, your beneficiaries will receive a lifetime monthly benefit based on the reduced benefit you would have been paid if you had retired on the date of your death.
